Memorializing a Loving Mother with a Video

Mandy from Ohio created a video memorial with images, music and more for Lauren and her family that they will show at her mom’s memorial.

Mandy was employed in the hospitality industry at a hotel & was laid off due to COVID-19 and the downturn of the travel industry. As part of the inaugural class of our Unemployment Transition Program, Mandy chose for her capstone project to help Lauren, a young woman who lost her mother to COVID-19.

Here is the gofundme fundraiser page for her mother:

Lessons Learned

Q. How do you feel this project affected the family or individual you helped?

I think this project will really help Lauren.  She expressed how lonely it’s been for her in losing her mom because her dad and her sister are not in a place where they are able to discuss her mom’s death so it’s been theratputic for her, just talking about the project.

Q. How did the project help you?

The project has helped me because it’s a great reminder of all the things I do have vs what I do not have, despite being unemployed.

Q. What advice would you give to other people who are comforting a bereaved family/individual?

I would tell others that it’s okay not to know what to say to a person grieving because sometimes your mere presence can be comforting.  But as taboo as it may be, it’s okay to ask them what they need as they are grieving.

Mandy graduated from our October 2020 Cohort with Distinction.
