Capstone Projects

Putting Personal Development to the Test

Our capstone projects are designed to incorporate the habits and skills we teach in our program by challenging participants to help others in need. Each capstone project takes between 3 and 12 hours to complete.

Participants will choose to help one of the two family options below:
  1. A  Bereaved Family
  2. A  Family with a child suffering from a chronic illness such as cancer

Participants will use their individual skills and creativity to develop a service project for their families. There are three types of projects they can choose from as outlined below.

Memorial or Creative Project

If completing a memorial project, you will create a unique project to help the bereaved individual or family memorialize their loved one. We encourage you to consider your skill set and background, to come up with a way to do this project that plays to your strengths. For example if you are skilled in graphic design, consider creating a video collage to pay homage to their loved one, or an art piece to memorialize them.

If completing a creative project for a family and child dealing with a serious illness, considering your skill set an develop a fun and creative project that can bring comfort and joy to the family during this difficult time. Some fun ideas include creating an activity package with games, crafts etc. or perhaps planning a game night and providing supplies. The ideas are endless and will depend on the family you are helping!

Fundraiser

For your capstone project you will create a unique fundraising project to help the bereaved individual or family raise money for a specific cost or need. We encourage you to consider your skill set and background, to come up with a fun way to do this project that plays to your strengths. For example if you are a passionate runner, start a Facebook campaign to help raise money to cover the headstone cost for the family and pledge to run 1 mile for every $50 raised. If you are a good cook, considering baking items and holding a bake sale to raise money for the family dealing with hospital bills for their child’s illness.

Practical Support

For your capstone project you will identify a practical way to provide support to the family during their time of need. We encourage you to consider your skill set and background, to come up with a way to do this project that plays to your strengths. For example if you are an accountant, help them tackle some financial concerns. If you live close by, volunteer to mow their grass, or set up a food chain to help provide meals.

Volunteer Hours

Alternatively, participants can meet the capstone requirements by identifying a local nonprofit organization in their area. Once approved, they will complete 10 hours of volunteer work for the organization throughout their 6-weeks in the program. Participants will document and reflect on their volunteer time through a final capstone submission.
