How to Overcome the Stress of Small Tasks

Have you ever had a small task feel like a mountain of work? Maybe it was a pile of dishes in the kitchen sink, scheduling an appointment with a therapist or helping your friend proofread their résumé because you said you would. Inside you know that any of these tasks won’t take much effort, but you can’t motivate yourself and you keep putting it off.

Here’s a tip that could help you overcome this strange phenomenon we have all experienced: Start timing yourself doing those tasks with your watch or your phone. Why? It’s all about solidifying a perspective with a number. For example, a full sink of dishes can cause me a lot of stress for some reason. But how long does it really take to load the dishwasher and hand wash the rest? I’ve timed myself. 9 minutes. Only NINE MINUTES! With this perspective in mind, the next time I see a bunch of dishes I get to say to myself…

“I know it looks intimidating but that is just a lie I’m telling myself. I know for a fact that is only 9 minutes of work.”

All of a sudden, it’s not about dishes… it’s not about the anxieties in my life… it’s about 9 minutes. I’ve done significantly more challenging things in my life for HOURS or even DAYS. 9 minutes is nothing to me. All I need to do is endure 9 minutes.

MAKE AN IMPACT: We are looking for a donor or company who is interested in helping us convert an existing storage building into a Group Activity Center so we have a place for group therapy, resiliency skills workshops and other mental health programming. The construction cost estimate is $60,000 and can make an impact for decades!  Do you know anyone who might be interested in helping? This and many other naming opportunities are available. We would love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out directly to our Camp Director, [email protected].
