4 Tips on How to Adapt to Change

It’s easy to be overwhelmed in today’s changing world. Consider the following approach to better adapt to change, build momentum, and take it all in stride while remaining productive.  

1. Read these quotes on change.

Quotes have a powerful way of changing perspectives quickly. 

2. Don’t be afraid to go slow.

Yes, sometimes change is immediately necessary but often it’s not. Try not to intimidate yourself with too rapid a pace. Take your time by starting with small actions that lead to sustained change. As Lao Tzu wrote, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” What can you do today? 

3. Show your plan to three people.

Just thinking about change isn’t enough. Make your future approachable by writing down actionable steps. Then review that plan with three people you trust (e.g. your best friend, a therapist, a mentor, etc.)  

4. Use memory aids.

With so much going on in the world, it is easy to be overwhelmed and lose focus on your goal. Post motivational reminders in your house, car and at work. These could be messages on sticky notes, famous quotes printed out, Promise Cards, or even a photo of a person you love for inspiration. Just remember, one isn’t enough. Post several of these reminders in prominent places in your life.
