“I guess I would call myself a prepper"

“I guess I would call myself a prepper; that’s someone who prepares for natural or man-made disasters. The first rule about being a prepper is “do not tell people you are a prepper.” In a real disaster, you don’t want people to know you have survival supplies because there is a fear that someone might rob you. Now that the survival scenario isn’t just hypothetical, I’ve come to realize that I don’t even want to live in a world where all I care about is myself.

I had 21 N95 respirator masks in my basement and I drove them to the hospital because that’s where they belong. Part of me really wanted to save two of these masks and send them to my grandparents because they are very elderly. I’m just really hoping that there’s a stranger somewhere in Sacramento, California who’s thinking like me. Maybe they drove their masks to the hospital, too, and that’s what stops my grandparents from becoming infected. That may be foolish to believe, but that’s the world I want to live in and so that’s what I’m going to do.
