It was April of 2013 when Deidre found out she was pregnant. She didn’t want her child to experience the disadvantages that she knows comes with being raised by a young single mother. So, with the help of her own mother and extended family, Deidre refused to drop out of high school while raising her daughter. She changed her circle of friends and continued her education. By the time of high school graduation she had transformed her GPA from a 1.2 to a 3.6. She applied to college and started studying to become a pediatric nurse. When times get tough Deidre closes her eyes, pictures her daughter’s face and thinks about how close she is to fulling the promise she made to herself.
